    If cycling has become so safe, why are they wearing helmets???

    Only frighten people wear cycle helmets, in places where cycling is normal only tourist wear cycle helmets. See to see what I mean…

    There will be no helmets in the great cycling future.

    There already are no helmets in most of the world.

    I can only assume this is a US-based cartoonist/website.

    They are wearing helmets for the same reason they are not smoking cigarettes. Helmets are not designed to protect a cyclist from being mowed down by a motor vehicle. They are designed to cushion the brain from a simple fall to the tarmac, and they do a decent job of that. US cyclists are able to think logically about helmets because our tradition of cycling from the pre-helmet days was interrupted by the dominance of automobiles. Thus we are not crippled in our thinking by several generations of helmetless cycling habit. Does putting seat belts in automobiles create a culture of fear that stops people driving?
