ECOTOPIA BIKE TOUR 2002

 The Ecotopia Bike Tour is an  annual event on an ecological/social-justice theme, particularly  focussed on sustainable transport. It crosses Europe on a different  route each year, culminating at the EYFA (European Youth For  Action - www.eyfa.org) Ecotopia gathering which takes place in a  different European country each summer.
In 2002 Ecotopia will be in Ireland and the Bike Tour route will  cross the U.K. It will start off in mid-July in Dover or London and  wend its way through Brighton, Oxford and possibly Bristol before  crossing Wales. At Hollyhead participants will catch a ferry to  Dublin and continue their journey to the gathering.
Ecotopia Bike Tour 2002 invites activists and cyclists to get  involved, take part or help organise, whether their concern is  disarmament, development, genetic engineering or transport.  Ecotopia Bike Tour would particularly appreciate any offers of  funding, food, or camping space along the route. Local know-how is  always highly prized, so anyone willing to be consulted over a  section of the route would be very useful. The organisers would  also be interested to learn if anyone has contacts in Ireland,  especially cycle campaigning organisations.

 E.U. BRINGS BACK THE RAILWAY AGE (AND SELLS IT?)

The European Commission has proposed a package of measures  to revitalise its railways, and bring about integrated rail across all  member nations and revive rail freight.  A European Railway  Agency has been proposed to act internationally to further this  agenda and oversee a common approach to safety, and a debate  has been opened on future action to improve quality of service  across the E.U. zone.

‘The state of Europe's rail services is indeed giving cause for  concern. Only eight percent of goods are carried by rail today,  compared with 21 percent in 1970. The average speed of  international rail freight services has fallen below 18 km/h, slower  than an icebreaker clearing the way for shipping in the Baltic Sea.  Yet there is nothing inevitable about this since in the USA rail  carries 40% of freight traffic.’ The trans-national European freight  network will be opened to international traffic in March 2003.   Further goals for debate include opening up the rail network to new  operators (Privatisation! What a splendid idea, with no drawbacks  at all!), ensuring passenger’s rights, strengthening the powers of  regulators, improve environmental performance, and create a  dedicated freight network.

 MEMOIRS OF AN AUTOPHOBE

The good people at Bike Reader have transcribed the entire 67,000- word, out-of-print book ‘The Man Who Loved Bicycles: The  Memoirs of an Autophobe.’ The interesting essay was originally  published in 1973 by Harper’s Magazine Press. It is now available  at  <http://www.bokeh.net/BikeReader/contributors/behrman/behrman.h tml>. The home page for the Bike Reader is  <http://www.bokeh.net/BikeReader/BikeReader.html>. There you’ll  find lots of bike-related humour, fiction, non-fiction, travel stories,  art, photography and more.
 

CARS GET INTO BIKES

Car manufacturers who also produce bicycles include: Audi, BMW,  Daewoo, Fiat, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes, Porsche, Renault, Skoda, Toyota and VW. Most are  brand extensions or one-offs, rather than stand-alone bicycle brands. BMW sold up to 7000 bikes in 2000  (Source: BikeEurope, November 2001). As congestion in cities throughout Europe increases, car  manufacturers are expected to equip their vehicles with 'boot bikes' - folding bicycles.  * HOW DO YOU SAY CAR-FREE? - Our good friends at the  CarFree Institute, officially the "International Institute for Carfree  Development, Ltd.," would like your help.  The Insitute is a non- profit corporation formed to promote research and education in  support of the development of carfree cities, districts and  neighborhoods, and they’re going to be putting up a website soon  (watch for future news).  They’re looking for the expressions that  are emerging and have emerged amongst campaigners worldwide  to describe the “carfree” concept.  What words are being used, as  well as literal translations, for this expression?  Doug Salzmann is  compiling a list of as many relevant phrases as possible : “The  terms we want are ones that carry a connotation of freedom from  autodependence, not a sense of lack or absence. “  Send any  terms and expressions you are aware of in your (non-English)  languages, no matter how obvious they seem to you to  <doug@carfreeinstitute.org>.  Pronunciation help and relevant  comments are appreicated, and tell him about any non-Latin  characters that might be in it.  Thanks !

* NEW UK ROAD PROTEST CAMP - A protest camp has been  set up on the site of the A6 Bypass in Alvaston, Devon, and they’re  calling for more people to join the camp.  The bypass goes right  next to a Primary school and will endanger the habitat of the  protected Great Crested Newts, as well as doing all the things  we’re so used to roads doing : increase regional air pollution (in an  Air Quality Management Area), congestion, noise pollution,  and  make all alternative journey modes longer.  See <www.alvaston- bypass.i8.com>.

* BICYCLE MESSENGER RESEARCH PROJECT - Bike  messengers around the world are encouraged to fill out the  WorldWide Bicycle Messenger Survey, which can be accessed at  <http://home.att.net/~bikemessenger>. The survey is part of a  transportation research project to document bicycle messengers  as one (non-motorised) element of the urban transportation  system. This study hopes to fill in some gaps by documenting the  locations and volume of deliveries made by bicycle in the  Washington, D.C., metro area, as well as provide some  demographic information about bicycle messengers from around  the world. An overall goal of this research will be to show the offset  in motorized transportation that is achieved through the use of  alternative transportation delivery services (i.e. bicycle  messengers). Bicycles are the most economical way (both in time  and pollution savings) to get around many cities.  It is hoped that  this research will help make a case for increasing support for the  use of non-motorized, non-polluting modes of transportation such  as the bicycle. * WORLD BANK BOYCOTT JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - A SEED*  seeks an organised, visionary, and motivated young person to  serve as a European coordinator for the World Bank Boycott.  The  person must be sorted, radical and committed to non-hierarchical  grassroots organising.  The candidate should be flexible and a fast  learner with global and local vision.  She or he should be capable of  working well within a group, but should also be self-driven.   Extremely helpful will be the ability to speak and write English well,  and skills in multiple languages are always a plus.  Preferable are  people with basic computer skills and knowledge of economic  globalisation issues including the World Bank and general  economics.  Of course, we are always flexible and will look at  candidates on a case-by-case basis.

* WINDSOR BIKERS ARE UNITED... - Welcome to Windsor,  Ontario, Canada.  The self-proclaimed automotive capital of  Canada.  Home to Ford, GM and DaimlerChrysler.  We build  minivans and maxivans.  Big V-8 and V-10 internal combustion  engines.  Every house has a two car garage and two big SUV's to  fill it.  We love cars and roads and we won't be happy until we have  0% tree cover and half the life expectancy of the average Canadian.   We've worked hard for all this and - DAMMIT! - we deserve it!   Fortunately not all think this way.  The Windsor Bicycling  Committee has just won a battle and got its Bicycle Use Master  Plan (BUMP, see http://www.windsorbump.com/) passed by city  council.  Hundreds of concerned citizens, environmental activists  and cyclists crowded city council chambers and signed petitions to  make sure this plan didn't get swept under the carpet.  BUMP will  give the citizens 270 Km's of bike routes, enabling those borderline  cyclists to finally make the switch.  The cycling committee is also  in its third year for its Bike-To-Work event, where citizens are  encouraged to relinquish their cars in favour of their bikes one day  a week for the entire month of June to win bikes, clothes and more.   This event has proven so popular that we are now branching out to  include the seven surrounding municipalities in the county.   Through this event we have eliminated over 2000 car-traveled  kilometers and exposed 300 people to the joys of bicycle  commuting.  This may not sound like much, but in an

ECOTOPIA BIKE TOUR 2002

La randonnée à vélo Ecotopia Bike Tour est un événement annuel sur le thème de l'écologie et la justice sociale, centré particulièrement sur les déplacements et les transports soutenables. Elle prend chaque année une route différente à travers l'Europe pour aboutir au rassemblement Ecotopia de l'EYFA (European Youth For Action ­ Jeunesses activistes européennes - www.eyfa.org). Ce rassemblement a lieu chaque été dans un pays européen différent.
En 2002, ce sera en Irlande, et la randonnée traversera le Royaume-Uni. Elle partira de Douvres ou Londres à la mi-juillet et ira son petit bonhomme de chemin en passant par Brighton, Oxford et peut-être Bristol avant de traverser le Pays de Galles. A Hollyhead les participants prendront le ferry pour Dublin et poursuivront leur voyage jusqu'au lieu de rassemblement.
Ecotopia Bike Tour 2002 invite les activistes et les cyclistes à s'engager à prendre part à l'organisation ou à donner un coup de main, quelles que soient leurs préoccupations : désarmement, développement, ingénierie génétique ou transports. Ecotopia Bike Tour apprécierait particulièrement toute offre de fonds, de nourriture ou d'emplacements de camping le long de sa route. Un know-how local est toujours hautement apprécié, et donc si quelqu'un veut bien être consulté sur un tronçon de la route, il sera de la plus grande utilité. L'UE EN REVIENT AU CHEMIN DE FER (ET LE VEND ?)

La Commission européenne a proposé un ensemble de mesures pour revitaliser ses chemins de fer, intégrer les différents systèmes de ses pays membres, et ressusciter le transport par rail. La mise sur pied d'une Agence européenne des chemins de fer a été proposée afin d'agir sur le plan international et d'assurer une approche commune de la sécurité. Un débat se poursuit sur les actions à mener prochainement dans le but d'améliorer la qualité du service partout dans la zone UE.

'L'état des services des chemins de fer européens est en effet préoccupant. De nos jours, seulement 8% des marchandises sont transportées par rail, contre 21% en 1970. La vitesse moyenne du transport international par chemin de fer est tombée sous les 18 km/h ­ c'est plus lent que les brise-glaces qui fraient le chemin des bateaux dans la mer Baltique. Et pourtant ce n'est pas inévitable : aux USA 40% du transport de marchandises se fait par le rail.'

Le Réseau européen de transport de marchandises sera ouvert au trafic international en mars 2003. D'autres débats sont prévus dans l'avenir, notamment sur les questions de l'éventuelle ouverture du Réseau à de nouveaux opérateurs (Privatisation ! Quelle idée splendide, sans aucun inconvénient !), de la garantie des droits des passagers, du renforcement des pouvoirs des régulateurs, de l'amélioration des performances sur le plan environnemental, et de la création d'un réseau propre au transport des marchandises.

* COMMENT DITES-VOUS "CAR-FREE" ? ­ Nos bons amis du CarFree Institute, officiellement "International Institute for Carfree Development, Ltd.", aimeraient avoir votre aide. L'Institut est une entreprise sans but lucratif. Il a été créé dans le but de promouvoir la recherche et l'enseignement pour le développement de villes, agglomérations et quartiers "car-free". Les membres de l'Institut sont en train de mettre au point un site sur la toile. Ils cherchent les expressions qui émergent ou ont émergé dans le monde entier pour désigner et défendre le concept de "car-free". Quelles sont les traductions, littérales et autres, de cette expression ? Doug Salzmann travaille à l'élaboration d'une liste la plus complète possible de telles expressions. Les termes que nous voulons sont ceux qui ont une connotation de liberté (de la dépendance de l'automobile) plutôt que d'absence, de manque ["free", en anglais, a le double sens de "libre" et de "sans" - NdT]. Envoyez à Doug Salzmann <doug@carfreeinstitute.org> les expressions que vous connaissez dans votre langue (autre que l'anglais), même si pour vous elles sont évidentes. * NOUVELLE OCCUPATION DE ROUTE EN ANGLETERRE ­ La voie rapide de contournement A6 à Alvaston, dans le Devon, est occupée par des manifestants. Ils demandent que plus de gens les rejoignent pour soutenir leur action. Cette route passe juste à côté d'une école primaire. Elle va mettre en danger l'habitat de la région protégée des Great Crested Newts et causer les mêmes dégâts que les autres grand routes : augmentation de la pollution de l'air (et ce, dans une "zone de gestion de la qualité de l'air"), embouteillages, bruit, et augmentation du temps de tous les déplacements alternatifs. * PROJET DE RECHERCHE SUR LA LIVRAISON DE COURRIER EXPRESS A VELO. - Les courriers express à vélo de par le monde sont chaudement invités à répondre à l'enquête WorldWide Bicycle Messenger Survey sur le site situé à <http://home.att.net/~bikemessenger>. Cette enquête fait partie d'un projet de recherche sur les transports. Il s'agit d'établir l'importance de ce système de livraison comme élément (non motorisé) du système de transport urbain. L'étude devrait combler certains fossés en produisant une documentation détaillée sur les lieux de livraison à vélo et sur le volume de ces livraisons, dans la région de Washington, D.C. Le projet devrait aussi fournir une information démographique sur les livreurs à vélo dans le monde. Un objectif de cette recherche est de montrer dans quelle mesure les services de livraison à vélo remplacent les transports motorisés. Le vélo est la solution la plus économique aux problèmes de déplacements dans la plupart des villes, tant du point de vue de la pollution que de la perte de temps. On peut espérer que cette recherche incitera les décideurs à encourager pratiquement l'utilisation des moyens de transports non motorisés et non polluants comme la bicyclette. * JOB POUR LE BOYCOTT DE LA BANQUE MONDIALE ­ A SEED cherche un jeune (fille ou garçon) visionnaire motivé et organisé pour la fonction de coordinateur européen du Boycott de la Banque mondiale. Il doit être débrouillard, rebelle et apte à travailler au niveau des organisations de base non-hiérarchiques. * LES CYCLISTES DE WINDSOR SONT UNIS ... ­ "Bienvenue à Windsor, Ontario, Canada. La capitale automobile du Canada. Ville de Ford, GM et Daimler Chrysler. Nous construisons des mini et des maxi fourgonnettes. Des gros moteurs à combustion interne V-8 et V-10. Chaque maison a un garage pour deux voitures avec deux gros SUV's [Véhicules Utilitaires Sportifs, ou "4x4"]. Nous aimons les voitures et les routes et nous ne trouverons notre bonheur que quand il n'y aura plus un seul arbre et quand l'espérance de vie du Canadien moyen sera réduite de moitié. Le Windsor Bicycling Commitee vient de gagner une bataille : le Conseil communal vient d'adopter son Maître plan pour l'utilisation du vélo [Bicycle Use Master Plan ­ BUMP], qu'on peut consulter à <http://www.windsorbump.com/>. Des centaines de citoyens concernés, d'activistes de l'environnement et de cyclistes ont occupé la salle du Conseil communal et signé des pétitions exigeant que le Plan ne soit pas relégué aux oubliettes. La mise en ¦uvre du BUMP donnera aux citoyens plus de 200 km de voies cyclables, ce qui aidera les cyclistes hésitants à faire le pas. Par ailleurs, cette année, le Comité en sera à sa troisième édition de l'action Bike-To-Work [Au travail à vélo] qui, en offrant des vélos, des vêtements appropriés, etc comme prix, encourage les citoyens à délaisser leurs voitures au profit de leurs vélos un jour par semaine pendant tout le mois de juin. Cette opération s'est révélée si populaire que nous envisageons maintenant de l'étendre aux sept municipalités du comté. Grâce à cette opération, nous avons éliminé plus de 2000 km de déplacements en voiture et donné à 300 personnes l'occasion d'apprécier les joies de la navette à vélo. Ca peut paraître peu, mais dans une ville où le tout-à-la-voiture est de rigueur, c'est beaucoup. Et la popularité de l'opération et du vélo ne fait que croître.
