[Carbusters Magazine General Discussion] Bike workshops of europe unite!

BIKE WORKSHOPS OF EUROPE UNITE!
www.romebikeforum.org
European Forum of bike recycling and community workshops

23/24/25 may 2007
Rome, Italy

We are glad to invite you to this European forum of bike workshops,
which will take place in may 23, 24 and 25 in Rome.

The time has come for us to meet, share ideas and knowledge on our
social projects, which as you know is the promotion of bicycling as a
mean of transport, as well as self organisation of the workshops, in
its many different variations. Collectives of people around Europe are
having a great impact on cities, diminishing pollution and promoting
human powered mobility, recycling bicycles, teaching, in a human way,
the DIY method.

We are a collective of people based in Rome, and what we do is as
simple as what You do: we fix and recycle bicycles. We promote
sustainable development, knowledge sharing, self empowerment, and we
try changing, constantly, the streets of our city, and their
predominance of cars.

This project is intended as a focus point on what we do and what we
practise best, the bikes of course, and their political and social
implications. The self organization as a method to administrate these
spaces, the self empowerment of each person coming, the repair
workshop, in whom we all participate, donate, work, and dream.

We would like to have you here, to hear how your project is growing,
what are the difficulties, and the successes that you encountered as a
bike repair collective.

On the website www.romebikeforum.org in the community section , we
would like to read your experiences as a bike collective. Subscribe to
the community, and tell your story. It is vital as may approaches,
because the meeting will try to seek a way to make us all unite under
common requests, and for a very peculiar reason.

The meeting will be just a week or two before Velo-city 2007 (
http://www.velo-city2007.com/ ), the bi-annual bike convention, held
this year in Munchen, and as a collective of bike workshops, we have
subscribed to this project, who could serve us all, to promote
recycling, to sustain the life of our workshops, to help them grow,
and become a specific feature of every city we live and work in.

The three days will be composed as follows:
http://www.romebikeforum.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=13&Itemid=35

On Saturday and Sunday, you are all invited to stay to enjoy the last
rides of the may critical mass, on sunday in particular we ride till
the seaside, and stay for the whole day. Return trip is provided by
national railroad system in Ostia (45 minutes to the centre of Rome).

For all days we will provide a free camping site in our own structure,
and free organic food cooked by our best chefs! J the social centre is
situated in via prenestina 173, 5 minutes by bike from termini, the
main station in the centre of Rome.

Any information on the accommodation can be asked directly, since now,
at ciclofficina.donchisciotte@gmail.com or going to the website of the
forum to check the logistics section. If you wish to register, please
specify if you are a structure or person, and if structure, how many
people will come.

We are a self organization, all we do is non profit, and we wish to
inform you that participation in this project both financially and
personally is more than welcome.

we have started a website / forum, that will be the true interface of
this forum. In this web-based community, we hope you will help us
build the process of understanding and sharing knowledge, setting the
first impressions for the forum, and debating on how to improve and
enrich it. Telling us your story and reading other's is going to help
us all in a way or another. If united, we could be more relevant, more
determined, more powerful as a tool for improving our common future.
check out the community section

It is time for us to leave you,

we hope to hear from you in the very near future.

We await you in Roma!

I saw an Inconvenient Truth. I also read Al Gore's book, "Earth in the Balance". He has some great ideas, and he made an effort to follow through on some of them, when he became VP. Remember the proposed BTU tax? The oil and auto industry lobbied for a huge media campaign against the tax, and it got buried. After that, the focus of the media became "Gays in the Military".

One page right out of his book, did get implemented, and that was "Matching federal funds to municipalities that installed Light Rail systems". Unlike the BTU tax, this was successful. Many cities (Denver, St. Louis, and others), took advantage of these funds, and started Light Rail systems. Unfortunately, two years later, the Republicans took control of the House, and the first thing they did, was abolish this program.

Now many of the cities in the US with Light Rail, have trouble expanding their systems to make them truly useful, because they have to go to the voters for tax increases. Meanwhile roads and auto infrastructure continues to be subsidized to the tune of billions of dollars per year.

The Communist Youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde dedicated its front page to the Cuban president, printing a blown-up picture of a pensive Castro with the title "Always fighting for something, and fighting with optimism!"

I think David has got a really valid point here. Crazy extremist 'I hate all cars' types (like me) are not going to convert many car-dependent people (and note the word 'dependent' there -- it's not often people's choice, it's just the way the world is). I'm really not sure what the best approach is to convince people that a car-free life really is better; my own solution is just to live, and hopefully show other people that it's not so impossible (or extreme) to not use a car. But that propably doesn't do much...

However, one point I would like to make is that these forums aren't only here (so far as I see) to convince people of how great carfree living is, they're also here for the support and inspiration of people in the 'carfree community' (whatever that is!).

I have just finished watching the film "An inconvenient truth" and at the end of the film the URL for this website appeared which led me here. I have been reading about the unfolding consequences of our lifestyles on the enviroment for some time now and like many i am very concerened. Here in the U.K. the general public seem to have a sort of collective apathy about climate change. Everyone does a little but not enough to help.

After watching that film with its balanced and well presented presentation of the problem, I'm surprised that a reference to this site was shown. a lot of these posts are very unbalanced it seems to me. One one side you have the tree huggers with their kill the car rhetoric and on the other side there is the "I love my SUV and I aint gonna give it up" bunch.

Any average person who reads the stupid cars=death rants on this site has just associated the film with green fanatics and this will dilute its message.

At least in the medium term cars must continue to exist, society could not function if they were all suddenly removed or taxed out of use. as a car mechanic (I can hear the greenies aiming their eco-friendly, bio-degradable bows and arrows) I can see how the existing cars could be a hell of a lot cleaner but it would mean people loving their cars more not less. If you are a driver there are a few simple things you can do to reduce your vehicles impact.

Check your tyre pressures, the vast majority of cars i work on have low pressure which creates resistance to the cars forward motion. if you believe me push your car a few feet then let 10lbs out of the tyres and push it again. the car will seem to weigh more.

Have your steering geometry checked regularly, wheels that are running out of line cause drag. this causes a similar effect to low tyre pressures plus the tyres will wear at an accelerated pace. It takes oil to make the tyres you'll fit as a replacement.

Keep to the manufacturers service shedule. un-serviced cars over time lose efficiency an without knowing it you will use more throttle to achieve the same speed as a well maintained car. hence more fuel use and emissions

fit fuel saver tyres. They are easily available and by design create less drag on the road surface.

insist on re-manufactured parts. overhauling an old part uses less resources than a new part and they will carry the same warranty.

modify your driving style, rapid changes in throttle wastes a lot of fuel. Avoid hard acceleration and move to a high gear as soon as possible without overloading the engine.

if you drive a diesel use biodiesel where possible. It is slowly becoming available over here and it is carbon neutral.

Leave your car at home. Car sharing is great and at least you arent the one dealing with the gridlock

remove any un-necessary clutter from your car. the more weight you are carrying, the more fuel you will use

close the windows,it kills your cars fuel efficiency. Air conditioning is more fuel efficient at high speeds.

finally ask yourself if you really need that 2 ton truck with a V8 in the front sure they're great to drive but its your kids and mine that are gonna pick up the tab.

First of all, congratulations at 2 years of being Car-Free. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to accomplish this. First of all, I'm married, and although she's bicycling a lot more of late, my wife still uses the car. Our father-in-law also moved in with us, and he has emphysema, so she needs to shuffle him around. Also, there is no Transit to my work. I commute by bicycle every day possible, but if the conditions are treacherous, I drive, or get a ride.

Regarding the subject of prostletyzing to friends, I don't do it either. But I have no qualms about wearing an advocacy statement while I ride. The passer-by cars are strangers, and I believe that these statements make them think about their choices.

Happy Riding!
Jim Gagnepain

(But back to the topic at hand...)

I've been completely carfree for the last two years: refusing to get in _any_ car whatsoever, and riding my bike or catching trains everywhere. I've been something of a stubborn git, and some people seem to get upset by my 'hardline' approach. Somehow, it seems that me saying 'no thanks' to their offer of a lift (into town, say) actually comes accross to them as me saying that I think they're bad people and that I don't respect their way of life! Has anyone else experienced this annoyance of car-users with people who won't use cars?

I never ever try to convince car-drivers that they should stop driving; I'm just not that much an evangalist -- it takes far too much effort! ;-) I prefer to just go about my slow little way and notice the small bits of the world...

I've categorically refused to step foot in a car for over two years now, and I'm loving it! I'd love to talk to you about it, but as I live in Canberra (Australia) I gues I'm a bit too far away. Good luck though, and be sure to post here any interesting results!

Long live the bike!!
